Self-Portrait (Culver's) Painting

For our third painting of the semester, our class was asked to create a self-portrait derived from direct observation or a photographic source. This painting would be completed in a full-color, representational style on a 18'' x 24'' stretched canvas.

For my self-portrait, I departed from the traditional idea of what constitutes an image of self. I instead chose to paint a Culver's location, a reference to my Midwestern identity and to my memories of visiting Culver's with family and friends throughout my life. I used a grid enlargement system to transfer my source image to the canvas and experimented with scumbling, glazing, and Liquin to depict the various textures and light sources present in the composition.
